Kite Research Page
The exact date and origin of the kite are not known. Some believe that kites were flown in China over 2,000 years ago. There is a legend about how the first kite was made. Supposedly, a Chinese farmer tied some string to his hat to keep it from blowing away, and the first kite was born. 200 B.C. is the first recorded time a kite was flown. The Chinese general, Han Hsin used a kite to figure out distances over the wall, and using those distances, his troops got to the other side of the wall, attacked, and ended victoriously.
